Minnesota businessman Tom Petters, accused of one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in U.S. history until Bernard Madoff was busted, will be pulling out all the stops in his fraud trial this week.
The 52-year-old Mr. Petters, a former appliance wholesaler from St. Cloud, Minn., whose up-by-the-bootstraps life story caused many locals to cheer his fame, riches and philanthropy, is set to go on trial this week in federal court in St. Paul. He was arrested last October and indicted Dec. 1 on 20 criminal counts for allegedly orchestrating a .5 billion fraud. He could face life in prison.
